Tyler Museum of Art: A Hidden Treasure Trove of Fine Art

With inspiring exhibits, interesting activities, and a dual focus on local and world-renowned art, Tyler Art Museum has all the attractions of a big-city art museum, but close to home. Housed on the Tyler Junior College campus about 15 minutes away from Orion at the Cascades, the museum’s modest exterior hides a treasure trove of gorgeous artworks inside.

The museum emphasizes 19th and 20th century art, as well as the works of local contemporary artists from Texas and the surrounding states. There are two huge galleries housing rotating exhibits and the permanent collection, a café and gift shop, and a patio and outdoor sculpture garden. Events are a highlight here. Lectures and gallery talks for adults examine the current exhibits, and there are free family days and art camps for kids. The next big exhibit is Chihuly: Works from Texas Collections, which will showcase the museum’s blend of local art with a world-wide perspective.

Tyler Museum of Art Near Orion at the Cascades I & II: An Emphasis on Local Artists

Tyler wasn't always the thriving city that it is today. Prosperity accompanied the rise of Texas's oil industry. With its newfound finances, the city decided to channel some money into the arts. After all, there wasn't an art museum within 100 miles of Tyler. That's why, in 1952, the Community Arts Committee began. At first, its responsibilities were fairly simple. The committee brought its traveling display of artwork to schools around the city right up until 1971. That was the year that Tyler Museum of Art became a permanent fixture on a plot of land located near Orion at the Cascades I & II.

Today, it houses more than 1,200 pieces of art that span the 19th and 20th centuries. Although the museum emphasizes up-and-coming local artists from Texas, it plays hosts to a variety of themes and techniques. What's more, Tyler Museum of Art invites traveling exhibits into its space, and they're usually pretty impressive ones.
