Meet an Array of Critters at the Caldwell Zoo

The Caldwell Zoo actually began as a playschool for local kids run by David King Caldwell. He enjoyed teaching children almost as much as he enjoyed animals, so his so-called Child Development Laboratory hosted an array of furry and feathery critters for the kids to play with, including parrots, squirrels, and even monkeys. That was 1937; by 1953, the local animal lover succeeded in opening the Caldwell Zoo for the children of east Texas.

The zoo remains in the same spot today, but it boasts even more creatures than the original. In fact, more than 3,400 animals call it home. In the African Savanna exhibit, expect to encounter everything from giraffes to elephants, whereas the South American habitat hosts anteaters, macaws, and even Chilean flamingos. These are just a few of the spots to explore, so give yourself an entire day to see what's in store at the Caldwell Zoo.
