La Madeleine Country French Cafe: For a Different Kind of French Dining

French restaurants tend to have the reputation for being expensive, however, you can find top-notch French-inspired cuisine near you for a great price. La Madeleine Country French Cafe on West SW Loop 323 in Tyler is probably your best bet in the area for doing just that.

Though this location of La Madeleine has only recently opened for business, it's already receiving rave reviews for its cozy and casual atmosphere as well as its food, which is a departure from other restaurants in the area. One of the biggest draws is the breakfast menu, which has both richer and lighter options for whatever appetite you have that day. Try the quiche with a rich crust or a flaky and savory croissant. And what would a French cafe be without crepes: check out the crepe Romanoff, which comes topped with strawberries Romanoff. La Madeleine is an excellent place to enjoy French-style food without spending a fortune, so be sure to check it out!

Rudy’s: A Unique Texan Barbecue Joint Near Orion at the Cascades

When Rudy debuted his first country store many decades ago, it was more of a gas station and local watering hole than anything else. Sure, it supplied some groceries, but it wasn't until 1989 when Rudy added fresh barbecue to the mix that Rudy's became a full-fledged restaurant. More than three decades later, Rudy's has locations across Texas and neighboring states, including one 2.8 miles from Orion at the Cascades.

It still dishes out the same fresh, Texas-style barbecue as Rudy did back then. Dig into half a pound of juicy brisket or leaner (but still tender) brisket, or try the turkey breast or pork loin. Jalapeño sausage, pulled pork, baby back ribs, and chicken are available too. Some of the meats come stuffed inside sandwiches such as the chopped beef and the pulled pork, and you can order sides like potato salad or corn on the cob to accompany any meal.

Reel in Fried Seafood at The Catch

Shrimp and grits. Grilled catfish. Pappardelle pasta. These are just a handful of the signature dishes served at The Catch, an eatery that just opened in December about 10 minutes from Orion at the Cascades. The seafood restaurant is already making waves with its baskets of fried fish, served with classic red-and-white-checkered paper and a side of fries.

The shrimp basket, in particular, is a hit. Order a regular, medium, or large size of the jumbo shrimp (or a regular or medium popcorn shrimp) and dig into your feast, which not only comes with fries, but also hush puppies. Fried catfish, whitefish, Cajun tenders, oysters, and crawfish are among your other options. However, you can also opt for something lighter, such as a taco stuffed with grilled fish or grilled shrimp, or order a po'boy filled to nearly overflowing with oysters or fresh whitefish.

Tyler Museum of Art: A Hidden Treasure Trove of Fine Art

With inspiring exhibits, interesting activities, and a dual focus on local and world-renowned art, Tyler Art Museum has all the attractions of a big-city art museum, but close to home. Housed on the Tyler Junior College campus about 15 minutes away from Orion at the Cascades, the museum’s modest exterior hides a treasure trove of gorgeous artworks inside.

The museum emphasizes 19th and 20th century art, as well as the works of local contemporary artists from Texas and the surrounding states. There are two huge galleries housing rotating exhibits and the permanent collection, a café and gift shop, and a patio and outdoor sculpture garden. Events are a highlight here. Lectures and gallery talks for adults examine the current exhibits, and there are free family days and art camps for kids. The next big exhibit is Chihuly: Works from Texas Collections, which will showcase the museum’s blend of local art with a world-wide perspective.
